  Reformers can be found in hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol process plants around the world. Typically, reformers contain several hundred vertically orientated straight tubes, referred to as catalyst tubes. The Inner Diameter (ID) of these particular tubes is generally between 72 mm and 132mm .During plant operation the tubes are filled with catalyst, with gases are passing through the catalyst at extremely high temperatures. One of the major concerns is that the tube material in the catalyst tubes is susceptible to a failure mechanism referred to as "creep". This condition exists due to the harsh environment in which the tubes are exposed, such as elevated temperatures and mechanical loading cycles. Being able to identify and locate such damage in its early stages of growth is essential for safe plant operation.
